Chashaku – Bamboo Matcha Scoop

A scoop just for matcha sounds absurd — until you try to measure matcha with a normal teaspoon. The powder is so fine that one time you pick up a gram and a half, the next time three, and the difference between those two cups is huge: one will be mild, the other bitter and muddy.

A chashaku, the bamboo matcha scoop, measures out the same amount every time. One scoop is roughly one gram, two is a standard portion, and that’s all you need to remember. The curved tip picks up the powder and lets you sift it straight into the bowl, instead of pouring it from the pouch by eye.

It is carved from a single piece of bamboo and has been used in the chanoyu tea ceremony for several hundred years — for the simple reason that nobody has come up with anything better.

• Care: rinse and dry after use; do not soak or put in the dishwasher
